December may be the last month of the calendar year, but history demonstrates that several highly significant events happened for the first time during the month of December. The first ten amendments, famously known as the Bill of Rights, became ratified during December of 1791. In North Carolina, during December of 1903, the Wright brothers completed their first flight. Additionally, the first ever successful heart transplant operation occurred in South Africa during December of 1967. Aside from these historical landmarks, December also possesses many important dates such as Pearl Harbor Day (12/7), Poinsettia Day (12/12) Christmas Day (12/25) and New Year’s Eve (12/31). Let’s take a look at some of the great events that are taking place at Manchester this December.

I am pleased and privileged to welcome you to what we believe will be another exciting year at Manchester Regional High School. I especially want to welcome our new freshmen who are embarking on a brand new educational experience as high school students. We are fortunate to have an amazing and dedicated staff, and we are welcoming nine new faculty members this year. They are joining a staff and a student body that has accomplished great things over the years, including achieving high scores on state mandated tests and being recognized by U.S. News and World Report on their list of Best High Schools in America five consecutive times. Thanks to the quality of education provided at Manchester Regional High School, our graduates attend some of the best colleges and universities in the nation, and last year’s graduating class earned over six million dollars in scholarships. We also have outstanding co-curricular and athletic activities, many of which achieve state recognition including our Make a Difference Club and our basketball team which won a state championship in 2015. We continue to upgrade our facilities as well. Among other projects last year, we replaced all of the windows facing Church Street significantly improving climate and appearance. This year we anticipate completing our locker replacement program providing our students the most up-to-date facilities to accommodate their book bags and other belongings. I am personally privileged to be entering my 16th year serving Manchester, 12 years as an administrator and educational leader, and I continue to look forward to being part of the wonderful Manchester family.
